What you can expect at Pathways
One-on-One personalized care without distractions from other providers and patients
Longer treatment sessions, providing focused care, without feeling rushed
Listening to your concerns, answering your questions, and adapting the session to your needs
Educating our patients is a big part of what we do, so you are setup with information and a strong home program to use between sessions, but also armed with knowledge for the future to “build your therapy tool kit”
We are not a “No pain, no gain” practice, everyone is different, so our approach will change as needed to help you progress and succeed with your recovery, while minimizing discomfort
So we may say “No Strain, no gain” and also encourage a “No suffering in silence” policy, letting us know what you like, don’t like as we go, so we can adjust treatment and/or explain what we need to do and why we need to do it
We will often use a hands-on approach, with manual therapy, but always based on your preference and comfort level
About our clinic
Pathways Hand Therapy and Wellness is located in a quiet country setting, without visible and audible distractions , with exception of some wildlife from time to time!
Cellular service is spotty in this area, so we do provide free Wi-fi for your use
You can expect a comfortable, calm clinic setting, with refreshments provided.
Do I need a prescription from the doctor first before starting Occupational Therapy?
No, you do not need a prescription/referral from the doctor to start Occupational Therapy in the state of Iowa.
Iowa is a “direct access” state for Occupational Therapy, which means anyone can start occupational therapy without a prescription. We do recommend keeping your primary care provider (PCP) in the loop regarding your injury/condition/concern, in case more follow up or testing is needed, but this is not required for your care.
We can help you get more clarity, and if you need to see a doctor, we can recommend which specialist may best suite your needs.
If you have already seen a provider/specialist, or have had surgery, with a Certified Hand Therapist we specialize in helping people after hand, wrist, elbow surgeries, so you can bring us your prescription. We can then keep in contact with your provider/surgeon, providing updated progress on your improvements and care.
Rates and Insurance
All treatment sessions are one-on-one with an expert Occupational Therapist/Certified Hand Therapist.
Sessions are typically scheduled for 1 hour, but can arrange for longer if that is what you and your therapist feel is needed, or shorter 30 minute sessions if you have a busy day. The rate for treatment sessions and other services vary, so please call us at (515) 337-2568 to enquire about pricing. We do offer mobile services if needed, with an additional travel/convenience fee.
We are a fee-for-service clinic that is not in-network with any insurances. Upon request, receipts can be provided that include the necessary codes for you to send in self-claims to your insurance company.
Can I bill my insurance for reimbursement of my out of pocket expenses?
Commercial Insurance plans (i.e. Wellmark, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, United Healthcare, etc)
This depends on the insurance you have, but YES, most Non-Medicare patients can send “self-claims” to their insurance company for their treatments at our clinic. You should be able to print claim forms off your insurance company’s website, and send it in with the needed receipts and treatment codes that will be provided upon request.
The amount of reimbursement or application towards your deductible is completely dependent on your insurance plan. If you call your insurance company to inquire about what you can expect to receive, you should ask about reimbursement for “out-of-network Occupational Therapy” expenses sent in via self-claims.
Medicare Beneficiaries:
The US government has some laws that control where Medicare beneficiaries can spend their healthcare dollar, with most healthcare providers enrolling in their system. While we are enrolled as a Medicare provider for purposes of treating Medicare beneficiaries at another location unconnected with Pathways, we do not treat Medicare patients at this location. We are not equipped to do Medicare billing. Additionally, some of the services we provide are not covered by Medicare. Therefore, we will only see you through Pathways Hand Therapy if you wish to pay privately for your services, agree that you will not submit our bills to Medicare for payment and you sign a Medicare Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) form. If you want Medicare to pay for any of your services that might be considered covered benefits, you should seek services from another Medicare enrolled provider. We would be happy to provide information on other OT/hand therapy services in the area.
Please contact us though if you have any specific questions about therapy services and insurance! We would be happy to go over your situation in more detail to help find the best pathway for your health and hand therapy needs!
